Deneen L. Garrett is known as a natural motivator and coach with a passion for diversity and inclusion (D&I) and a gift for innovation and execution. This talent cultivator excels at improving professional development for marginalized employees and has contributed to AT&T’s recognition for diversity excellence by DiversityInc, HRC Corporate Equality Index, NBIC Best of the Best Corporation, #3 Top 50 DiversityInc, a two-time finalist for Out & Equal Outie Awards, and the Inclusion National Business Inclusion Consortium.
Diversity & inclusion Experience & achievements
Deneen L. Garrett rose rapidly through her early career at AT&T as she earned promotions from Customer Service Advocate, Sales Support Manager, Lead Sales Support Manager, and Sales Order Quality Project Manager roles during 2000—2006. Promoted yet again in 2009 to Customer Service Manager – Internet Services, her process improvement, and operational strengths quickly became evident via her leadership of a team of 20 serving a customer base of 17,000. She built out a digital pilot program that drove customer experience from 4th to 1st quintiles and achieved +90% call efficiency, +81% necessary dispatch, and 67% improvement in 30 days. By refocusing the call center’s focus and leveraging customer service and product training, she catalyzed a 200% revenue gain.
Named Manager – Entertainment Group in 2013, she realized similar productivity growth for a 100-person vendor management group while outpacing performance metrics by 100% and carving out $2 million in annual savings. Deneen also developed and facilitated a leadership development program for non-managers and championed mentoring with a group of 200 management staff.
Elevated to Senior Manager & Lead Diversity Consultant in 2016 to leverage talent acquisition, employee development, and sponsorship initiatives on behalf of marginalized AT&T employees, she co-founded the D&I’s first-ever Inclusion Council and leads D&I projects impacting 250,000 global employees.
Through her leadership of diversity and inclusion programs spanning multiple employee segments, Deneen L. Garrett serves as a key culture change advocate and best practices champion within AT&T. She rolled out a staff development and mentorship program that generated participant promotions, hosted career programs for college students, and led executive leadership tours with Hispanic and Latino staff. Her efforts expanded sponsorship of Out & Equal and more than doubled attendance of a panel she created over a three-year period.
Deneen activated an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention initiative and boosted diversity hires 90% by employing a range of non-traditional recruiting practices.
Most recently Deneen launched the An Intimate Conversation with Women of Color podcast. Through her podcast, Deneen seeks empower and to elevate the voices of Women of Color.
Credentials & awards
Deneen earned her Master of Science Administration General Administration (MSA) degree from Central Michigan University, and her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BS) from Wayne State University. She has earned Six Sigma White and Yellow Belts and is certified in Quality Management System Lean. Her writing has been showcased as part of Diversity Best Practices & Hispanic Heritage Month and in events such as Out & Equal Southern States, AT&T, TECHNOLOchicas & HACEMOS Promote Women in STEM, and DBP Members Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Her AT&T honors include Top 3 in Sales, President’s Club, and the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award (nine times).
