Former Mayor of Atlanta

Shirley Clarke Franklin serves as President of Clarke-Franklin & Associates, Inc, a management consulting firm and as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Purpose Built Communities Board of Directors. From 2002 to 2010 Franklin served as Mayor of the City of Atlanta, after 2 successful citywide elections, as the first women mayor and the first African American women to serve as mayor of a major Southern City.

 

Her career spans 21 years in executive positions in Atlanta city government having served in the administrations of legendary leaders Mayor Maynard Jackson and Ambassador Andrew Young. Franklin has made her home in Atlanta once 1972 after teaching at Talladega College in Alabama and after completing her Bachelor of Arts at Howard University and Master of Arts in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania in her hometown, Philadelphia, PA.
